Motorcycle Maintenance Advice from the Auto Shop

If you own a motorcycle, you probably take very good care of it. You drive it as often as you can and make sure it is well maintained. Regardless of if you do maintenance yourself or take it to your trusted auto shop, there are a few elements of motorcycles that should be checked regularly to keep your bike running at peak efficiency.

The auto shop team at Terry’s Auto Service and Towing have gathered a few of the most common maintenance issues for motorcycles to keep an eye out for. Not all of these issues require taking your bike to an auto shop, but if you notice anything out-of-the-ordinary with your motorcycle, take it to your auto shop and get it checked out.

Tire Wear and Tear

Just like with cars, the tires on motorcycles get worn over time. While tire wear is definitely one of the most common motorcycle maintenance issues, there are a few other things regarding the tires that you should be on the lookout for. If your tire pressure is lower on one tire than the other, that can cause uneven wear on your tires and could cause many issues if not fixed. Before you go on a ride, check your tire pressure according to the specifications in your owner’s manual.

Another part of tire wear that you need to be on the lookout for is debris or punctures in your tires. Nails and other debris often get stuck in the tread on tires. This debris can result in a flat or, even worse, a blowout. Checking over your tires before you drive your motorcycle is a good way to reduce the likelihood of getting in an accident and getting injured. If you notice a puncture, take your bike into an auto shop that specializes in flat tire repair.

Chain Lubrication

The chain on a motorcycle is one of the most essential elements to the vehicle. If a chain has been improperly maintained, it can result in catastrophic damage to both the motorcycle and to the rider. Be sure to regularly oil the chain and make sure that it is aligned properly. A few minutes of maintenance can save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

Fluid Levels

As with any vehicle, a motorcycle requires a number of different fluids to work properly. Maintaining the proper levels of these fluids are crucial to the efficiency of the bike. Some motorcycles have indicator lights to let you know when a fluid is getting low, while others require you to manually check the fluids. Make checking your motorcycles fluids a habit before you go for a ride.
