Our auto shop experts tell all.

There are plenty of car myths floating around out there, but Terry’s Auto Shop experts are happy to debunk them and fill you in on what’s really true.

For the majority of car owners, the fact that you own and drive an automobile doesn’t necessarily make you an expert on how a car operates. While you can certainly pick up on obvious signs and symptoms of a problem with your vehicle, most drivers do not have the knowledge and expertise of a professional mechanic.

Unfortunately there are plenty of myths about cars and car repairs that are passed around from one car owner to another that may or may not be true. At Terry’s Auto Service and Towing, we want our customers to have all the facts when it comes to automobiles and that is why our auto shop experts are debunking some of the most prevalent car myths.

4 Myths Debunked By The Experts at Terry’s Auto Shop

Electric cars more likely to catch fire.

While there have been several reports of electric cars catching on fire, the truth is that gas-powered cars are just as likely to ignite. It all depends on the circumstances. The Chevy Volt was one electric car that has caught fire, and in 2012, a study was conducted that looked into the fire hazard risks of this particular make and model. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration concluded that electric cars like the Chevy Volt, do not pose a higher risk of catching fire than gas powered cars.

You get more gas for your money if you fill up in the morning.

Many people believe this to be true because gasoline is in fact denser when the temperatures are cooler. But the truth is that gasoline is stored underground, where the temperature is less likely to fluctuate, so the gas you put in your car will be of the same density, regardless of what time of day you choose to fill up.

Generic brand gas will do damage to your car.

While it may be true that name brand gas stations such as Shell or Mobil may put cleaning additives in their gas, the lower priced (or off-brand) gasoline still has to meet the same quality standards as the much more expensive brands. Our auto shop experts will assure you that you are not harming your car by going with the more affordable option.

Red cars are more likely to be pulled over than any other colored car.

Recent studies have shown that when it comes to getting pulled over, the color of the car you are driving has absolutely no affect. Although the vehicle make and model may have an affect on ticketing. Fun fact: the most ticketed car to be pulled over in recent years is the Mercedes-Benz SL Class convertible, which can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
