Roadside Assistance: What To Do If You Lock Yourself Out Of Your Car

roadside assistance for lock out service

Roadside assistance will get you out of this sticky situation.

So you’ve locked your keys inside your car. It happens to everyone, don’t worry. Read the Terry’s Auto Service and Towing blog to find out what to do next.

You’re late and you know it. You rush to your car only to find your keys are not in your hand. Instead, they are inside your locked car. Few things are quite as frustrating as being trapped outside your car with keys that are equally visible and inaccessible.

You need roadside assistance, and you need it fast.

Here’s what to do when you find yourself locked out and late.

Take a deep breath.

You’re locked out and you can’t change it, so relax, and stop calling yourself names. It happens to everyone. Trust us, we know.

Assess your situation.

Are you in a safe neighborhood? Is it day time? If you answered no to both of those questions, don’t mess around. Either call the police or a friend who is nearby and able to come get you. If you feel safe waiting where you are, move on to the next step.

Call whoever is waiting on you.

Let them know what’s going on. You’ll get there as soon as you can, but for now, you’re stuck.

Get your spare.

It looks like you’re going to be on your phone a lot because the next step is to call anyone who has a spare key to your vehicle. If you don’t have a spare key you can probably guess what’s next.

Call Terry’s Auto Service and Towing for roadside assistance.

Did you keep your phone out? Good. Use it to call our local auto shop and roadside assistance service.

You might be tempted to unlock the door yourself. If you Google “how to unlock my car without keys” you’ll find plenty of people with tutorials advocating self help, but unless you’re a police officer with the right training, we suggest you don’t. The old hanger trick will leave you with scratched windows and the tennis ball trick will just waste your time. Call in the professionals at Terry’s Auto Service and Towing if you value your car.

Once our wrecker service has opened your door and released your keys, it’s time to make a prevention plan for the next time, you know, when none of this happens.

To keep yourself from locking yourself out again, try one or more of these tricks.

  1. Always keep your keys on a carabiner, one of those clippy things mountain climbers use. Then, when you get out of the car, you can clip them onto your pants or your purse. Once you’re in the habit, you’ll do it without even thinking. Which is a lot better than locking them in without thinking.

  2. Make a spare set of keys and give it to someone you trust. If your sister has a copy of your car key, she can open your door for you, instead of paying roadside assistance to do it.

  3. Start using your keys to lock the car door, even if you’ve already pressed the button to lock all the doors at once, lock it again with your key in hand. No, you’re not being obsessive, you’re just protecting yourself. If you lock the door manually, with the key, you can’t leave that key in the car.

Good luck! And remember, if all else fails, you can give your favorite springfield towing service a call for roadside assistance, and we’ll be right there.
