The importance of changing your oil on a regular basis.

Today is the day you are scheduled to get an oil change at your local auto shop. You already know the drill. You bring in your vehicle, you leave it with your mechanic for a couple of hours and you get it back with a sticker slapped on your windshield, reminding you when to come back again for the next oil change.

Typically, your auto shop will recommend that you change your oil every 3,000 miles (it can vary depending on what kind of vehicle you have and what kind of oil you use). But what if you wait 6,000 miles or 12,000 miles. Does it really matter that much? The answer is yes.

Motor Oil Functions

What happens when you rub your hands together in a quick motion? They begin to get very warm due to friction. If you rub your hands together for too long, you’ll get very tired and you may even acquire some blisters or burns.

This scenario is similar to what happens in your vehicle’s engine. There are several moving parts underneath your vehicle’s hood that rub together, create friction and build up heat. Oil helps with reducing this friction and absorbs heat. Without regular oil changes from a local auto shop, your engine will get tired, weak and burnt out.

What Happens When You Don’t Change Your Oil

Listed below are four issues that may arise if you do not change your oil regularly.

  • Engine Wear: If you do not change your oil regularly, your engine can become worn out from heat and friction. This will cause the engine to not work properly or efficiently.

  • Sludge: Going to your local auto shop for a regular oil change is also important because there can be a buildup of sludge in your oil which can cause your engine to break down.

  • Seized Pistons: Avoiding oil changes can also cause your pistons to seize. This means that your engine will not turn and your vehicle will not operate.

  • Total Engine Failure: Although it may take awhile for your vehicle to result in engine failure due to not changing your oil, it can happen. And if it does, you will need to replace or rebuild your engine, which is much more expensive than a regular oil change.

Although you may not enjoy spending money to take your vehicle to an auto shop for an oil change, it will save you time, energy, and frustration in the long run. Not to mention, it can save you thousands of dollars in potential issues that may arise from avoiding oil changes.
